How long do peptides last after reconstitution?
The direct answer
Most reconstituted peptides keep about 28-30 days refrigerated (2-8 C) when mixed with bacteriostatic water, and should not be frozen once mixed. Mixed with plain sterile water instead, the window drops to roughly 24 hours. These are consensus ranges for research peptides - approved products and compounding pharmacies set their own dates, which come first.

Why a mixed vial has a clock on it
A peptide is a short chain of amino acids linked by peptide bonds. Freeze-dried into a powder and sealed, those bonds sit in a dry, cold, stable state and can last a year or more. The moment you add water, you restart chemistry that had been paused: water molecules slowly attack the bonds (hydrolysis), the chain can fold or clump (aggregation), and warmth, light, and repeated temperature swings all speed the process up. None of this is visible at first. That is the whole reason reconstitution starts a clock - the solution is losing intact, active peptide from the day it is mixed, even when it still looks perfectly clear.
Bacteriostatic water changes the math in one specific way: it contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol, a preservative that holds bacterial growth in check, which is why a vial mixed with it can be entered repeatedly over weeks. Plain sterile water has no preservative, so a vial mixed with it is treated as effectively single-session - hours, not weeks.
The general rules
Powder beats solution
A sealed, freeze-dried vial is far more stable than the same peptide once mixed. Keep it as powder until you are ready to use it.
Cold is longer - for the powder
Frozen at -20 C or below keeps sealed powder longest; the fridge is shorter-term; room temperature is really just the shipping window.
Once mixed, the fridge
Reconstituted solution lives at 2-8 C. Freezing it risks freeze-thaw damage for many peptides, so most guidance says do not.
Preservative buys you weeks
Bacteriostatic water gives a multi-week window after mixing; plain sterile water gives about a day.
Protect from light
Light degrades many peptides - GHK-Cu especially, because of its copper ion. Keep vials in a box or amber glass.
Trust your eyes last, not first
Discard anything cloudy, discolored, or full of particles - but do not assume a clear solution is still fully potent past its window.
The exceptions worth knowing
A few compounds break the 28-day rule of thumb in either direction:
GLP-1 pens (semaglutide, tirzepatide)
Branded pens ship as pre-filled liquid, not powder. Ozempic is labeled for 56 days in use; Mounjaro for up to 21 days at room temperature. Both say never freeze. Compounded vials follow the pharmacy's date instead.
Tesamorelin (Egrifta SV)
The label says use it immediately after mixing and discard the rest - not a multi-week vial. The WR formulation allows up to 7 days.
Thymosin alpha-1 (Zadaxin)
The ex-US label says use immediately once reconstituted; no post-mix shelf life is given.
Sermorelin
Compounding pharmacies commonly assign a beyond-use date up to about 90 days refrigerated - longer than the research-peptide norm, but set per pharmacy, so follow the printed date.
GHK-Cu
Unusually light-sensitive because of the copper ion; needs dark or amber storage even during brief handling.
MK-677
Not injected at all - it is an oral compound, so reconstitution shelf life does not apply.
Signs a vial has gone bad
Discard the vial - do not dose from it - if you see any of these:
- Cloudiness or haze in a solution that was clear when you mixed it.
- A color change - yellowing, browning, or any tint that was not there before.
- Floating particles, flakes, or strands (undissolved or precipitated peptide).
- An off or unusual smell.
- The solution was frozen, dropped, or left warm for an extended time - freeze-thaw and heat degrade peptides even when the vial still looks fine.
- The mix date has passed the compound's window and you cannot verify it is still good.
The catch: early degradation is usually invisible. A clear, in-date solution is not a guarantee of full potency - it is just the absence of the obvious failure signs. That is why the mix date matters as much as the look.
